Nowadys the law does not specify a maximum weight to be lifted but does place the emphases on companies to ensure they manage their own risks. There are various measure in place to ensure contractors meet the requirements of these duties, that differ depending upon various scenarios and tasks that are being carried out.
Personel carrying out lifting and handling must be an employers consideration and one that individuals they should be trained to do. Consideration should be given to an individuals capabilities such as strength, fitness, underlying medical conditions, the weight to be lifted and distance to be carried, the nature of the load or the postures to be adopted or the availability of equipment to facilitate the lift.
